THIS SURVEY IS NOW CLOSED – MANY THANKS FOR YOUR INTEREST

The Maritime Charities Group (MCG) has commissioned a study of the estimated size and demographic profile of the UK’s Merchant Navy and fishing fleet personnel and their dependants, from 2019–2040. This research will cover UK nationals (aged 18+) who are working/former seafarers, their families, and service-providers working in maritime welfare charities. It will include all UK seafarers, except those covered by a separate project being conducted by Greenwich Hospital, the Royal Navy and Royal Marines (RNRM) Charity, and the RAF Benevolent Fund on the UK’s RAF, and RNRM populations.

The MCG will use this data to better understand the welfare needs, locations, challenges and changes facing seafarers and their dependants. Due to increased demand, the MCG survey will remain open until 11:59 pm (GMT) on Sunday 6th Oct 2024.

The study includes four surveys for:

(1) Working seafarers who are UK nationals
(2) Former seafarers who are UK nationals (including those who are retired or now working in a different profession)
(3) Partners/family members of seafarers (seafarer must be a UK national)
(4) Maritime charity service-providers in the UK.

Each survey link contains an Information Sheet, providing detailed information on the survey including the type of questions that will be asked. Please read the Information Sheet before deciding whether to consent to take part. If you select 'Agree to take part', the survey will automatically begin. All information that is collected in the surveys will be anonymous and confidential.

You may participate in this study from different perspectives. For example, you may be a seafarer and also a partner or family member of a seafarer, or you may be a charity service-provider and also a former seafarer. If you have time to take part in this research from different perspectives, we would be grateful if you could complete the different surveys that are relevant for you. Your input could benefit the lived experience of both seafarers and their families.

We are also carrying out interviews and focus groups with seafarers, former seafarers, partners/family members, and maritime charity service-providers. Please contact the research team directly if you wish to take part in an interview/focus group or if you would like to receive further information on this study: mcgseafarerstudy@outlook.com
