MCG is delighted to support a new initiative from the Seafarers’ International Research Centre (SIRC) at Cardiff University. With funding from MCG members The Seafarers’ Charity, SIRC will be looking at the port-based welfare needs of women seafarers working on cargo ships, research that is long overdue.
Welcoming this initiative, Commander Graham Hockley LVO RN, Chairman of MCG, said:
“I’m delighted to welcome this important piece of research by SIRC into an issue that is little understood. We know that women seafarers make less use of port-based welfare services than men but we don’t know why. This study will help us gain a better understanding of the challenges faced by women on cargo ships and how welfare services might be developed to better support their needs.”
